Mindset

Students, we are beginning our journey to learn about our mindsets.  Mindsets are beliefs that we each hold about our abilities.  In a Fixed Mindset, people believe that basic qualities such as intelligence and abilities are fixed, and cannot be developed.  They believe that only talent creates success.  They see effort as a sign of weakness.

People who have a Growth Mindset believe that they can develop their brain, their abilities, their talents.  This view creates a love for learning, a drive for growth, and a resiliency that is essential for great accomplishments.  They see effort as a strategy needed to reach their full potential.

Think of a time when you have encountered a Fixed Mindset.  It could be something that you believe about yourself, it could be an example from a book or a movie.  In your first paragraph, describe the fixed mindset.  In your second paragraph, describe a time when you have noticed a Growth Mindset.  It could also be an example from your life, or an example from a book or a movie.

Finally, make sure to read through the posts and comment on their thinking and their stories.  Comments should be thoughtful and add value to the conversation. I am eager to hear your thinking and your experiences about this!

  1. I showed a fixed mindset in my high school math class. I always thought that I was a very good math student. Math came easy to me, and I throughout school I took many accelerated math courses. This continued into high school. As a freshman in high school, I was sitting in a Trigonometry class surrounded by juniors, because I was taking math two years above where my peers were. The following year, the next math class was Advanced Placement Calculus. Since math had always been easy, I felt that this would be too. After the first few weeks, it was clear that this course was going to take a lot of time and a lot of effort; it no longer came easily and quickly to me. This is where I made my mistake. I quit. Looking back, I'm embarrassed that I quit. But I quit. It was hard, I didn't understand it, and therefore I thought "I'm no longer good at math." To this day, I think about how I quit that class, and I wonder if I was willing and driven to put in the extra time and effort, how much more I could have learned.

Interestingly, I later learned a growth mindset about math. In college, I started to teach students about math, and I great increasingly interested in how people understand math concepts. Rather than shying away from math, like I did in that high school class, I decided to use it to motivate myself. I took classes where I could investigate how people learn math and how they conceptualize, or understand, ideas. It taught me to love math, and it taught me that my journey of learning math would never, ever end.

    1. I liked how you gave us the time and place for your Fixed Mindset. I like your ending too! I also think the same thing about the Growth Mindset, that I said about the Fixed Mindset. Good job!

  2. Sometimes I have fixed mindsets and other times I have growth mindsets. One time I had a fixed mindset was when my friend took me fishing. One reason I did not enjoy this visit to the lake was because my friends dad cut off the head of a worm and the worm kept moving. It was disgusting. Plus I didn’t even catch anything. Fishing is not my thing.

One time I had a growth mindset was a time when I was at ballet. I was watching some of the ballerinas that were a lot better than me and I noticed things that made them good. I quickly tried to apply this to myself so I could get better. This is one time I had a growth mindset while I was trying to get better.

  3. In Swimming, I can have a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. One time that I have had a fixed mindset was when I had a brace on my arm after broke it. I was swimming and m coaches kept correcting me, and then I started to feel like I was a bad swimmer. After that practice I started to feel like I wanted to quit. But I didn't and I’m glad.
A time that I've had a growth mindset was when I was doing a swimming clinic. We were practicing freestyle and I was just doing my normal stroke and my coach corrected me. But, this time I took it into consideration and I changed my stroke. Then later at my meet I swam a fifty freestyle and because I changed my stroke I swam it in thirty-four seconds. I was so glad I listened to my coaches corrections.

  4. an example of a growth mind set is that I was at Clarkson park and this guy started doing parkour and I started doing parkour.

A example of fixed mindset is I was going to do this HUGE jump but my mind started saying you can't do it but I did it

  5. An example of a fixed mindset would be Edmund from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Edmund is just like ‘Oh Narnia isn't real and I don’t care, Lucy is just out of her mind, and I don’t want to go if it is real because I don’t want to go on an adventure, it will just waste all my time‘. An example of a growth mindset would be Lucy from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe she was like ‘Wow Narnia is so awesome I’ll go explore it!!!!’.

  6. Times when I had a Fixed Mindset is when I am watching stunt Youtube videos with my dad and my family. I think to myself, “I would never be able to do that.” Sometimes I tell my self in a way that I am not talented. I can be very rough on my self.
A time when I have noticed a Growth Mindset is when I am watching the movie Brave. The movie shows a Growth Mindset because, the main character, has a Growth Mindset by climbing a mountain like rock, and drinking from the waterfall, and finally, believing in herself

  8. In the movie Girl vs monster the main character who’s name I forgot had a fixed mind set that monsters existed at the beginning. At the end of the movie another character who’s name I forgot had changed from a fixed mindset to a growth mind set about standing up for himself.

    Fixed Mindsets
In my perspective, I think people who have fixed mindsets are holding themselves from doing something great or not being able to develop their brain and work hard.

    Growth Mindsets
When I was working on a project with a friend, it took a month, but it was all worth it because we had a great slide show ready to present. I you need is courage and determination, and you can get the job done.

  10. I have a huge growth mindset on singing. I love singing and after I got in a musical play I had a big growth set. When we practice singing I try my hardest to get my notes right. Also, when we do choreography, I try to stay focused with the dancing steps. My goal is to be good on my solo on the four days we perform.
I have a fixed mindset on Soccer. I can’t kick that hard and I don’t remember positions. I don’t think I can learn that much because I’m not really interested in it. When I was little I played soccer, at least tried to. It started raining and I slipped and fell in the mud. I was in my own world and missed the ball. I guess it wasn't my thing.

  11. I think that having a fixed mindset is like not believing in yourself. You’re not thinking positively about things. If you think that you’ll never be able to be as flexible as someone else, that’s a fixed mindset. You just need to work harder.
Growth mindsets are more positive. You think anything is possible and that you can accomplish your goals. You might have to work hard, but you’ll accomplish your goal in the end.

  12. I had a fixed mindset when I was younger.I took basketball lessons and I did not really like it.I felt like I was doing too much work.It was hard because I did not know who to pass to.I decided to quit.
I have a growth mindset when I sing.Sometimes, I record myself and I sound a little different. But I don’t want to give to give.I love singing and I never want to stop doing it.

  13. I usually have a growth mindset in math. I always believe that I can get better and better at my math. If I just keep working hard at it, I could turn into a math genius. I love to learn new things in math when I am doing good at it.

Very rarely I will have a fixed mindset on math. I usually have it on subjects that I don’t enjoy very well. I just want to keep working on what I am doing if I can’t get it right and I wouldn’t want to keep learning more things until I got it right.

  15. A time where I had a fixed mindset was when I was in 4th grade. I was taking my beginning of the year MAPS test for reading. I was SO nervous I felt like I was going to pass out (like I always feel before I take a test). When I was done with the test I looked at my score and then my score from last years end of the year MAPS test for reading. I WENT DOWN LIKE 5 POINTS!!!!! I could not believe I went down because I felt like I tryed my best. I thought to myself “I am a failure”.

A time when I had a growth mindset was not to long ago. I was writing my first essay I have ever written about a book called Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. The essay was due the next day and I still had to write 2 more paragraphs before I was done. I thought to myself “I can do this” and I did. I realized that all I needed was a little determination and motivation from myself.

  16. A time I had a growth mindset was the ime when I was learning how to do a standing backhandspring. I was really determined to get it so I I kept on practiceing it. I really had a growth mindset because almost all the free time I had I was always practicing it.

A time when I had a fixed mindset was when I was playing soccer with my brother. Since he is a softmore in high school he was a lot better then me. There was also a difference because Dustin is on a soccer team and I m not.

  17. Blog post 2- I have always had a growth mindset in dance. I always want to learn new dance techniques from a new ballet step to an awesome hip-hop move. I think that you can always have a growth mindset on dance because you can never stop learning new moves and you will have a mindset that keeps growing.
I have had a fixed mindset on basketball. It is very hard for me to learn new ways to make a hoop and I don't think that you can learn how to do some cool move if you've never done it an I think that basketball is a very hard sport and therefore I think it's hard to have a growth mindset in basketball.

  18. A time when I had a growth mindset was when I was in math and we started a new unit and it was so, so hard. Instead of giving up I worked even harder and soon it was a piece of cake. I used to think Gymnastics was stupid. I had a very fixed mindset. I thought that I could never do it because I wasn’t flexible. One day I tried it and it was AWESOME!!!

  19. I had a fixed mindset when I was about five years old and I joined a gymnastics class, I always wanted to be a gymnast but when all of the other kids could do the cartwheels and splits, and I couldn’t I felt like I couldn’t do it and I gave up and haven’t done gymnastics sense.
I have a growth mindset on math when I was in third grade there were other kids going to a fourth grade class to do advanced math so I practiced harder and harder at home and at school, then in fourth grade Jessie and Mel went to fifth grade for advanced math and I really wanted to go to but I thought it might be too hard. My parents, teachers and I talked about it at conferences and we discussed that fourth grade math might be to easy so we decided that I would practice more over the summer and I might be able to go to sixth grade math the next year. Now that I have practiced over the summer I am in sixth grade math and I am practicing more and more since I am behind most of the other kids and now I am catching up to the rest of my class.

  23. Fixed Mindset
One time I have had a fixed mindset was last year. It was when me and a kid named Lauren were staying after school for art. Mrs. Maxwell kept on complementing Lauren about how good she was in art, so I had a fixed mindset that I would never be as good as her, and I still think that but, no one is as good as her and I have learned to accept that!!

    Growth Mindset
One time I have seen a growth mindset is when I was reading The Red Pyramid Carter’s dad said he kept on trying to do magical egyptian stuff, and he had a growth mindset to keep trying, so he did, and it didn't turn out so well but he is surely gonna keep trying!!

  26. I think that all mindsets connect to each other in lots of different ways such as that someone that has a fixed mindset just gives something one chance as opposed to someone who gives something as many chances as they can. I have an example for both of these.
My first example is a fixed mindset that I have it is Basketball. Everyone thinks that I’m really good and I think that I’m terrible I think that I can’t shoot. I did try Basketball my teammates that I still have near me. Say that I scored most of our points I think that this is not right at all. A kid Steven he was good at everything, setting picks, shooting and defence. This kid was insane.
I have a few growth mindsets like: Math, football and unicycling. I will tell you about football today. I used to not be able to catch anything now I can catch anything or get a throw to anyone.
I hope this has showed you things that you might not have seen.

  27. My mindset that I’m writing right now is about a time when I noticed a fixed mindset so here it is.

One time I was at home after gymnastics and I looked at my score and saw that I didn't make it to the next level because I missed four things which were:
    1. shoot through
    2. Back handspring
    3. pull over
    4.?
(if you are wondering why I put a ? in the fourth space its because I can't remember what its called).
And I was terribly sad because my friend did and we would not be able to be together and I thought I would never be able to do shoot through because they were super hard. So my mom called Rosalind's mom and she said that Rosalind would not be going to the next class because it was too much money so I was so happy!
After the next few weeks of gymnastics I finally did a shoot through! I don’t even know how I did it!

The next mindset is a growth mindset and here it is:

So one day I was in school and we had just started reading a book called The City Of Ember and a boy named Doon wanted to switch jobs on assignment day with a girl named Lina.(assignment day in Ember is when all the kids when they are 12 get a job) Lina was so surprised because she had got pipe works laborer and Doon got messenger so he asked to switch and work down in the pipe works where the generator is because it is breaking down and he wanted to fix it.
Lina on the other hand was so surprised and said yes because she loved to run.
The reason why I think Doon had a growth mindset is because he thought he could fix it and that's what he loved to do.

  28. I’ve had a lot of fixed mindsets in my life. Most of them about my family and friends, but not all. Like once, I had a fixed mindset about pocket knives. My dad trusted me with a pocket knife when I was 2 years old, and left me alone, with a pocket knife. I cut my thumb open and ran inside my house. Thats why I have a fixed mindset on pocket knives.
I’ve always had a growth mindset on writing because I’m never wanting to write or even sit down, but I believe that if I try I can get better at it.

    Mindset
I know a book about a Growth mindset about Wonder Augest, a boy who goes to school for the first time and he wanted to get out of school when he first starts school, but he keeps on going and doing his work.

    My Mindset
I a little about both of the mindsets. I have one about Fix Mindset of football and baseball. I also have one about Growth Mindset of trying to do my best in math and all the subjects in school. A Fix Mindset is when you think that you can't do something without even trying. A Growth Mindset is when you try to do something that you don't know you can do.

One time I had a Growth Mindset was in real life. One time I had a Fixed Mindset when we were taking a test in 2nd or 3rd grade I can’t remember. It was the very last question until recess, I just couldn’t figure it out. The question was to cut the circle into 3rds but I kept drawing different things until I got it.

I’ve never really had a Fixed Mindset but the one time I did was when I was Drawing. I was trying to draw a football. When I was drawing the football I didn’t like so I ripped it up and started crying then I went to bed.
