Where the Mountain Meets the Moon 9/9

Ma said stories were worthless, but stories play an important role throughout Minli's adventure.  Using examples from the book, how did stories help Minli and others reach their goals? How did stories help characters change and develop throughout the book?

  1. I believe that stories helped each character in Where the Mountain Meets the Moon - even Ma, who initially did not believe in stories. At the beginning of the book, Ma said, "Stop believing stories and stop wasting your time." (page 25) However, Ma grew and learned through the stories that she heard from Ba and others. She learned to enjoy stories, for example when she told Ba, "I wouldn't mind hearing it...It might make the time pass faster." (page 225) At the end, she herself created "The Story that Ma Told" (page 252) to help her find the words about what she had done wrong and why she was sorry.

It was stories that motivated Minli to go pursue happiness for her family, and whenever she faced a difficulty, she heard a story that gave her an answer as to how to keep going. She learned from stories where other people did good, and from stories where other characters misbehaved. I think that - just like Minli learns and changes from these stories - the reader also learns and changes when hearing each story.

  2. I think stories helped other characters by making them think anything is possible. For example, when Minli’s goldfish told the story about her Aunt,in the end she finally found the gate and became a dragon. Another example would be when Ba told the story of The Old Man on The Moon Minli thought she could go ask him how to change her family’s fortune and eventually she found him and changed their fortune. Lastly, it made a development in Ma’s life when she told a story of her own. It helped her because it told how lucky they already were, but she kept complaining. Finally Minli wanted her to be happy , so she went to the Old Man of The Moon.

    1. Nice thinking. I like your idea that "stories helped other characters by making them think anything is possible". You gave four strong examples of why that is true.

  3. Story’s made Minlis adventure she changed the whole family’s fortune with story’s! Also Ma is more happy now that she’s heard story’s.Minli believed and that made everybody happy. I think story’s are really big in this book there intresting and kept Minli going.Storys also helped her figure out things. For example in the book it says that the goldfish man met the old man on the moon if that story didn’t happen ma and ba would probaly look harder and find her.Next every single story helped her in this book! One really cool thing is if Ba didn’t know the story of the dragon pearl they wouldn’t know their fortune changed. All in all story’s are very important in this book.

  4. Ma said stories were worthless, but stories play an important role throughout Minli's adventure. Using examples from the book, how did stories help Minli and others reach their goals? How did stories help characters change and develop throughout the book?

The story of the Old Man of the Moon on Never Ending Mountain helped Minli to achieve her goals of bringing jade to her home. Another example is the story of the goldfish man in which they change the mans fortune. The story Made Ma and Ba realise that they can believe in their daughter which I believe is a very good goal that they should've had.
For the next answer I say that many stories have helped Ma to get a liking in stories. Also Ba telling Minli so many stories many stories gave Minli the ability to tell her own story of Where the mountain Meets the Moon

    1. Interesting thought - your response made me think about how really it was Ba's stories that began the entire chain of events. However, then I thought about how most of the other stories had already happened before Ba told his story, so now I'm not sure. I don't know if Ba's stories propelled Minli to go on her adventure, or if she was already destined to go meet The Old Man of the Moon.

How did stories help characters change and develop throughout the book? One example is in the Old Man Of The Moon story helps Dragon and Minli find the Old Man Of The Moon. Then in the Magistrate Tiger story it tells Dragon and Minli what they might be going up against. Also every story tells about a person.

  7. Well, my answer for number one is….. stories are important in Where The Mountain Meets The Moon. The whole story is almost completely made out of other small stories. So it is important to understand. Minli is changed by the stories and is now adventurist along with the others. This is also how they changed and Ma started liking stories.

    1. Good job. I agree that all the stories instilled confidence, bravery, and a sense of adventure into Minli, because before she heard the stories she was stuck in a boring and routine life at home.

What is your thinking about the second part of the question?

Stories helped minli find the old man of the moon; stories also helped minli find fortune for dragon to help him fly rather than change her family's fortune.

  9. Stories are very important to Minli because they led her the right direction to change dragon’s fortune and how he could fly to the orange dragon and live happily ever after! Ma was right and wrong. The stories are not very important but without them Minli couldn’t have helped Dragon fly. So my answer is that all stories are important

    1. Can you clarify why you think the stories are not very important? I don't see an example of that in your response.

  10. Stories are important to Minli because they make her feel at home. Also to help her understand things like how to find the old man of the moon and how to help Dragon. Stories are important to Minli because they help her throughout her journey. Also they play an important role during the story.

  12. I think that stories in this book are very helpful to everyone. Ma didn’t like them until she heard more of them and started to believe in her daughter. Without stories in the book Minli would not know any of these things and would be clueless about how to change her family’s fortune which is the adventure of the book. In conclusion they didn’t just help with her adventure but they also help her learn more about her new friends.

  13. Stories play a important role in Where The Mountain Meets The Moon because Minli went to the never ending mountain because of stories that she thinks is true. One example is when Dragon found out out he could fly by ripping the stone ball of his head.
