Wonder Precepts

Here is a presentation that has all of Mr. Brown's precepts, as well as some that the characters in the book sent to Mr. Brown throughout their summer vacation:  http://portal.sliderocket.com/BVMNQ/WONDER-precepts 

Look through these precepts, and decide which one is most important to you.  
Why is it an important quote to remember?
What happened in the book Wonder that connects to this quote?  Give the example of what happened, and also spend a few sentences explaining why the two relate to one another. 


Remember to write your response on your Google Doc, then copy it into the blog.  Also, make sure you are signed in to the blog to post your response.  After students have responded, go back and comment to your peers.   Assignment due Tuesday, October 29th.

  3. My Favorite Precept in the book Wonder is “It is better to know part of the question than all the answers.” This precept is very important to me because it is better to understand a little bit of something, then knowing everything about it.

  4. Hannah’s thinking one Wonder

    Precept:Kind words do not cost much.Yet they accomplish much.~Confucius

    I believe that This precept means that saying kind words does not take much effort, but it does make a HUGE difference for someone else.Example:
    You are new at at school.Someone could be nice to you, and that would make you feel happy,OR you could be put down.Then, since you're new, you would learn how to act like that.It's like saying treat people the way you want to be treated.

  5. All you need is love.




    Was my favorite because, I relate to that with my loved ones. To me I feel safe only when I’m near someone I love. When my love ones are close I am protected. This quote relates to Wonder because, when August said to his mom that he could go without baboo for the nature retreat it was like he felt like Jack was his near loved one.

I like the percept “Just follow the day and reach for the sun!” This quote is important because it reminds you that even if you are having a bad day, you should make the best out of it and don’t worry about it. This relates to the book Wonder because Auggie doesn't worry about what people think of him. Everything bad that could possibly happen happened to Auggie, but he just kept smiling. The bullies at the camp made fun of Auggie, Julian was being really mean, and Daisy (Auggie’s pet dog,) died. But August never gave up.

    I think the best wonder precept is september because you should always be kind and sometimes you learn a little something when you're wrong so thats why I like the september precept- ‘’When given the choice between being right or being kind choose KIND’’=)

    1. Good job relating the quote to the book. I think your evidence goes both ways - you said that "when August is nice to other people he gets more people to like him..." I agree with that. I also think that when other people were nice to August (Amos, Miles, Jack, Summer) their amount of friends, and how they felt about themselves, grew enormously.

    Is my favorite precept yet. I think it is the best because to me it means that you can be kind easily (just saying something nice,) And have best friends for life, a good reputation or most likely both. So basically it’s like good karma. Do something good and you will get something good in return.

    1. I see how it is like karma, and I also see how it accomplishes much for the *other* person - the person receiving the kind words. I'm thinking about how Summer consistently spoke kind words, and because of that, she was a true friend to August.

The quote that is the most important to me is “if you really want something in this life, you've got to work for it. now quiet, they're about to say the lottery numbers!”.It means that you can’t earn anything by doing something lazy, you have to do hard work for the thing you want. In wonder when jack and august were doing their science project jack wasn’t doing the hard work for it but he wanted to finish the project, for example in augusts room jack saw augusts Xbox and got distracted

      I also like that quote, because the irony of it makes it very funny. It's ironic that someone who is suggesting that hard work is important would also play the lottery, because the lottery is pure luck.

  12. The quote that speaks to me most is Xiema Chin’s quote:To be thine own self be true.Shakespeare. This is an important quote to remember because one of your most unique qualities is...well,your uniqueness.In Wonder,August was unique because of his deformity.People looked at him like he was an artifact.But that is no way to treat a fellow human.We need to treat all humans equal!In the Declaration of Independence,it states that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”.

    1. Will, you did a good job of finding an example in the book that went along with the precept, and then you added the history piece that you enjoy and know a lot about.

      I think that other characters also give evidence of this. For example, when Jack was his true self - kind and understanding - he felt better than when he was pretending to be someone else, like he consistently did in front of Julian at the beginning of the book.

  13. Everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives, so if someone you love hasn’t gotten in one yet, stand up and cheer. Well it’s important to me because it’s like cheering others on and letting them know that you're here. When the seventh graders were making fun of August. Jack, Amos, Henry and Miles all stud up and helped August and Jack

    1. Interesting. Are you suggesting that it felt equally as good for August when Amos, Henry, and Miles stood up for August as when August received a standing ovation at the end of the year?

  14. One of the best precepts from Wonder is "Sometimes it's good to start over." This was submitted by the character Julian over summer break, as he decides to go to a new school rather than return to Breecher Prep. Although Julian is the antagonist in this book (he is the mean bully that consistently tries to hurt August's feelings), I believe that his quote is very wise.

    Starting over is like having a second chance, and everyone deserves this opportunity. Throughout the book August, Jack, Julian, and Miranda show examples of being able to have a second chance to make better choices and decisions. For example, Miranda was not being a good friend to Via, until she had the opportunity to do something special for Via by letting her star in the lead role of the play. When she did this, she was creating a turning point for their friendship where they could start over and then become good friends again.

    Additionally, Jack shows the reader how he had to "start over" his friendship with August. After August heard Jack saying mean comments about him on Halloween, their friendship was broken. Jack had to start over and earn August's trust back again so that they could remain true friends.

    Some people may want to see a negative ending for Julian because he was so mean throughout the book. However, I think that even mean people deserve a second chance to show how they can change and improve. I like to think that this is what happened to Julian (if the book was to continue on). Because he wrote the precept "Sometimes it's good to start over", I wonder if he realizes that being a bully actually causes you to lose friends. I hope that he starts over by being more accepting and kind.

    This quote means lot’s to me because...
    ...The just follow the day means to me that you need to just roll along with the day and don’t make one thing at the beginning of the day ruen the rest of your day. Just blow things off and don’t let anything hold you back!
    The reach for the sun part I think is like reach for the stars. It relates to the book by that Auggie does all he can and reaches as high up as he can to get to where he ended up and that could happen to who ever does it.

    Julian Albans
    This quote is important to remember because when you say “sometimes it’s good to start over”, it really means if you are doing something bad in life or something like that then it is kind of time to refresh your life or something like that.
    What happened in the book Wonder that connects to this quote is when Julian is being mean to August. Then, after the nature reserve hike school trip, Julian kind of had/ needed to/ wanted to to start over.
    These two things relate to each other because Julian was doing bad things in life, and when you start your life over some, then you were probably doing something you didn’t like or something bad. So, basically, Julian needed to start over like some people need to.

    We are always Talking about it and one of my favorite animals lives in the Ocean so I feel like it is important that we save the animals that live in the Ocean.

  19. “Have no friends not equal to yourself.” This quote really stands out to me because, it’s true. If you have a friend that thinks they are better than you, and they are mean to you, don’t be their friend. And this is done a lot throughout wonder. In the beginning, August's parents change. In the middle, jack changes. And in the end, everyone changes.

  20. My favorite precept from the book “Wonder” is “Your deeds are your monuments” because if you do something good, that is what you are known for. I can relate to that, for example because I usually am really confident and daring and that is what people know me and like me for.

My Favorite Precept in the book Wonder is “If you can get through middle school without hurting anybody’s feelings, that’s really cool beans.” It means even though nobody’s perfect, you should try to always be kind to everybody. This is important to me because kindness is very important to me too. I think you should always be kind. Also, try not to hurt other people’s feelings and if you do always apologize to that person.

    I think the best wonder precept is september because you should always be kind and sometimes you learn a little something when you're wrong so thats why I like the september precept- ‘’When given the choice between being right or being kind choose KIND’’=) I think this Precept belongs in the book because it goes good for Julian he is always right and never kind because he always wants to be popular and he just never wants to be kind because maybe he thinks being wrong would drain his popularity and then he wouldn’t be much popular.I think this precept also goes really goes good with for Summer because she chose to be kind instead of being right with the group that she was in bad mouthing August but then she saw him sitting all alone so she chose to be kind instead of agreeing with her group that he was creepy and weird-’’When given the choice between being right and being kind choose KIND’’=).

    fixed mindset: real live; I know that lauren is a good drawer but i also know that i'm a good drawer and that i will never be as good as her.
    growth mindset: i know that lauren is a good drawer and that i am too , i'm not as good as her but eventually i just might be.
    fixed mindset: city of ember; some of the people thought that they would never get out and that all hope was lost.
    growth mindset: lina and doon knew that there was a way out and they tried to tell everyone but they didn’t listen, they found the exit and then they believed that they could get out and they did,
    fixed mindset: mirror mirror; the queen said that she would not marry anyone unless he is rich.
    growth mindset: the queen desided that it doesn’t matter who she marries just as long as its someone that she likes .

An example of a fixed mindset is in the movie Wreck it Ralph.Ralph feels like people didn’t like him and he felt left out so he leaves his game.Also when Venelope says she doesn’t know how to drive Ralph has a fixed mindset about getting his medal back and he was thinking i'm not going to get my medal back.

    An example of a growth mindset is in the book Big Nate goes for broke. When Nate is determined to beat the kids at jefferson middle school after the jefferson kids beat them tons of times.Also in the book,Big Nate in a class by himself,Nate reads a fortune cookie that says “you will surpass all others” and he gets determined to do something that no one in the school has ever done.
